About the instructor of Portsmouth Thai Boxing, Muay Thai Kick Boxing in Portsmouth
Pre-Training (general questions)
- What age can you begin training?
- The minimum age for training is 16 years old, although lessons for children may begin in the future so be sure to routinely check for any news via our Portsmouth Thai Boxing Blog page. If you would like to be updated in the future when a new possible Kids Only (under 16) class may be introduced OR if you would like to express your interest in this class, please contact the instructor.
- I haven’t exercised in a long time and am out of shape. Will I be fit enough to train?
- Absolutely! Have no fear, the Portsmouth Muay Thai Boxing classes allow for all types of people and levels to steadily build up their fitness. So don’t worry you won’t be expected to do a thousand press ups on day one... be at least day 3! (Joke).
- Can women do Muay Thai Boxing?
- They most certainly can! All the Portsmouth Muay Thai Boxing training sessions are open to men and women of all levels and abilities. We currently have regular female members training, so why not visit a class and speak to them personally.
- Do I need to have done martial arts before?
- Of course not as every journey needs a first step. Besides, it’s often an advantage to have not trained before as you are effectively a 'blank canvas'.
- What things do I need to attend Muay Thai training classes?
- There are three requirements which are required by all members in order to attend regular training, these are as follows:
1) a club licence
2) a club uniform
3) a membership subscription plan (options available)
For further information on the club licence and uniform, please view the Portsmouth Thai Boxing Information page.
For further information on the club membership, please view the Portsmouth Thai Boxing Price List page.
Attending Classes
- What should I wear for training?
- Whatever you are comfortable in, be it shorts or tracksuit, vest or t–shirt. So any loose clothing is recommended. Please also remember; Muay Thai Boxing is carried out barefoot so please make sure nails are short and clean! Trainers can be worn for those that need to, just let the class instructor know when you arrive for class.
- Will I get hit?
- Not if you duck fast enough! Only joking! To be a fighter is not for everyone due to the extreme dedication and time needed and you can’t escape the fact that it can be painful. Remember the classes offer something for everyone, so if fighting isn’t for you then perhaps you’d like to grade or simply train for fitness and health. Sparring and interclubs are something that is encouraged for all students to do but only when the instructor feels they’ve reached a level where they are able to. It’s a great tool for testing your skill and fitness plus you learn a lot about yourself and it’s carried out in a controlled environment under the instructor's watchful eye. So don’t panic, the instructor won’t be gloving you up and chucking you into 10 rounds of hard sparring on your first night!
- How long will it take for me to get good?
- Muay Thai Boxing is like everything in life – you only get out what you put in... So put in a half effort and you’re going to get half effort results! Progress doesn’t happen by accident, nor is there a magic pill or some JedI mind trick the instructor can perform on you. No, the secret is thousands of years old, passed down from master to student for a hundred generations and I’m prepared to share it with you. The secret to success is... effort! That’s right.. "effort", short and simple. So dust down your gear, prepare your water and get ready to put in some effort, I promise the results are worth it...!
